"Double Rainbow" socks for Michael :-))

I want to take a little break in my posts from "Wear a Shawl Challenge" series . I am wearing a shawl today and will continue with this project in the next post ;-)
Today, I would like to show you a little project I finished this past weekend. I wanted to knit my kids some socks for colder weather. I am not a big fan of sock knitting, but have knitted some over the years. In fact, the very first item I have ever knitted were socks ;-)) In my teenage years I badly wanted to learn to knit. I found an old pamphlet at home on how to knit socks and 5 DPN needles. My mom could knit a little and bought those things for herself to try. The pamphlet had no photographs, but just some drawing on how to go about knitting socks. I had no fear and also did not realize that socks most likely not the best project to learn to knit on ;-)) However, it worked for me. Somehow I got it, knitted my first pair of socks and the rest is history ;-)))

I have searched on Ravelry for a good pattern for boys socks, but nothing really got my attention. I decided to use Basic Sock Pattern by Ann Budd.  Free instructions for these socks can be found here.
I called this project "Double rainbow" and it can be found on Ravelry here.
This is very easy to follow and to knit socks pattern for kids. The instructions are for different gauges and kids ages. Basic sock pattern recipe. I highly recommend it if you just want simple no fuss socks for a child.
My son loves his socks :-)) However, he was very uncooperative for picture taking as you can see ;-)) Grimacing and goofing around ;-)) Well, it is to be expected for a 6 year old :-))
The yarn I have used is Zauberball by Schoppel-Wolle in colorway 1564 Frische Fische. The colors  of this colorway are fun and bright. Perfect for kids. The yarn itself is OK.  It is soft enough even for a child, but just after one time wear the yarn became somewhat fuzzy. This was a bit disappointing for a sock yarn. Maybe it will be better suited for scarfs and shawls.

Oстановилась на очень простой модели Basic Sock Pattern by Ann Budd.

 Happy Knitting,
Diana

"Darling Emma" cardigan

It is finally finished :-))))
Here is my cardigan "Darling Emma" by Joji Locatell.
My project on Ravelry.

The cardigan turned out beautiful. I love it :-)) It was a long project for me, but it was worth all the time and effort. It is a beautiful design and a pretty straight forward knit. The cardi is seamless and knitted form the bottom-up. Collar is joined to the neck stitches as it is being knitted and sleeves are knitted seamless form the top and shaped by short rows. I did do some modification, but they mostly where done to customize the cardigan for me and represent my personal knitting preferences and the fit I like. The instructions are easy to follow. The lace part is very easy and collar joint to the neck stitches is simple to do as well. The short row cap shaping was new to me and took some getting used to. Read more on that and all the other modification I have done in Mods section of my Raverly project page.

I have used Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Silk Solids yarn in Natural. The yarn is just fabulous :-)) First time knitting with it and I love it. 20 % silk content makes all the difference. The knitted fabric after washing became very silky and drapes beautifully. It stretched slightly, mostly in length of cardi, but not in the width. Sleeves did not stretched. The cardigan has luxurious feel to me :-))
Thank you Joji for the opportunity to test-knit ” Emma”. I will surely enjoy wearing this cardi :-))

Test Knitting "Emma"

I am test knitting "Emma" cardigan for Joji. Wonderful pattern :-)) The cardigan is seamless and knitted from the bottom up. Sleeves are then knitted seamless from the top.  The cardigan is long and wrap style. I am using Supersock Silk Solids by Cherry tree Hill. This yarn feels lovely . It is silky and soft, but well spun.  The only thing is that I had to use metal needles instead of my favorite bamboo needles. The yarn is not slippery at all, despite the silk content.  The yarn is 4 ply, so it is a slow process, but very enjoyable one ;-))
My project on Ravelry is here :-)

A Gift and WIP :-))

Last night I came home and found a package from Anna Kuduja (Ravelry, blog) in my mailbox :-)))) In the package was this beautiful Lithuanian Linen SIŪLAS of simply amazing color. The color is even more stunning in real life, then in  photographs. Thank you Anna, I am in love with this yarn and cannot wait to knit with it :-)))

Also, Anna send me 4 issues of Estonian knitting magazine Käsitöö. What a beautiful journal :-)) Anna's designs are often published in Käsitöö and I enjoyed looking at photographs of projects seen before on her blog and Ravelry pages and now in a new light on the pages of
Käsitöö.

I especially love this particular design by Anna (project on Ravelry)  and planning to knit this top for myself when the weather gets colder around here ;-)

Now, to my current WIP. I have started this simple classic cardigan in 2ply lace yarn. The cardigan is seamless and knitted from the top. I am alternating two yarns. Yellow yarn is

The pattern I use as a base for this cardigan is from Knitty, Spring + Summer 2011 issue and is called "Amiga" . My project on Ravelry.

However, I will have to put my "Amiga" cardi on hold in few days, because then I will receive the yarn to start a test knit for Joji. I am very exited to be  test knitting her new design called "Emma" :-))

Rewinding the yarn :-))

With a big stash of lace weight yarn I found myself dreading rewinding those huge 1400 or so meters long skeins by hanging them on the chair and rewinding them into balls. It was just time consuming and not that enjoyable.  I wanted a ball winder :-)))) I have recently bought Knitting Yarn Swift  and Knitting Yarn Ball Winder from Knit Picks. Now I do not know how I managed without one :-))) It is such a time saver and makes the whole process much easier and pleasurable and as turned out my kids like it a lot too and want to help :-)) Look for yourself :-)))

The yarn I am rewinding in the pictures is Filatura Di Crosa Centolavaggi Cobweb / 1 ply 100 % merino with 1531 yards (1400 meters) in 100g skein. I have 3keins which makes it 4593.0 yards (4199.8 m) of yarn :-))) It took me only about 45 minutes to rewind all 3 skeins!!!!! Needless to say I am very happy and have more free time to knit :-)))
